The price of solar panels has been falling and that, combined with political uncertainty in the US and Europe, has made it a tough environment for solar energy companies lately. Solar energy in Africa, on the other hand, promises a bright future for solar energy development for companies in those markets. In fact, North Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East are all considered emerging solar energy consumers which represent the future for solar energy news.
These regions have optimal physical geography (lots of sun!) for solar energy development. What’s more, the also present ideal conditions in other ways: strong arguments for solar energy development like:
- not much existing energy grid
- energy poverty
- what does exist is very expensive so solar energy compares favorably in cost
Most energy production in Africa comes from fossil fuel sources (coal, oil, gas). However, since the continent as a whole is quite poor, developing the infrastructure to distribute grid energy has been slow to develop. Many rural areas rely on diesel generators for energy. Solar energy is cost effective compared to these decentralized generators. Most Africans without access to electricity are living in rural areas, where solar energy is going to be cost competitive.
You got it: solar energy in Africa could be the cheapest option in most parts of that continent!
